ASL Alphabet & Name Learning
In this one-time class learners will become more familiar with the ASL alphabet as well as learning to fingerspell their name. We will also practice reading and spelling 2-3 letter words. This lesson will start with a warm welcome where everyone can introduce themselves and explain why they are interested in ASL.
We will go over all letters of the alphabet A-Z. We will break the alphabet down into 4 parts and pace ourselves as to not get too overwhelmed. As we make our way through the alphabet I will introduce some 2-3 fingerspelled words for practice. We will then practice fingerspelling our names.
The alphabet will be split like so: A-G, H-N, O-T, U-Z.
-- Getting started --
The first quarter of the alphabet will be A-G, and we will practice this portion together for a few times. I will finger spell words like ‘BAD’ ‘DAD’ ‘BEEF’ ‘FEE’ to practice recognizing them in words. This will happen with each portion. They will be guided through the hand shapes of each letter and given fun and creative mnemonic tips to help them remember these letters. Mnemonics are devices such as patterns, ideas, or associations that assist in remembering something. Once the alphabet has been practiced, names will be learned. Each student will have a chance to sign their name and present it to the class. I will then picks a student to translate the name into English.
Example of the mnemonics that I will use: The letter T almost resembles a turtle's head poking through its shell, so T for turtle. This visual cue will help as an aid for remembering the letter.
The class will wrap up with some things that they learned and if they have any lingering questions or comments.
*NO previous experience is required for this lesson.
I will supply some resources to take home for students to continue their practice!
